The sound on this is surprisingly good for a cameraphone but the visuals aren’t because I didn’t have a great view of the stage and my filming was a pretty half-arsed attempt. Think of it as ambient video..

Still, hopefully it gives you an idea of what a cracking night Gerry Loves Records put on at the Banshee Labyrinth in Edinburgh on Friday, despite some last minute line-up changes due to the weather.

Apologies also the audience members who are in shot. Due to the fact this was filmed entirely without permission and without any attempt at professionalism I’m calling it the Burgh Bootlegs #1. Like most of the new series I start on this blog, who knows if there actually will be a #2..

I thoroughly recommend you pop over to the Gerry Loves Records website to get hold of their latest release which is superb – it features the excellent song Tomlinson’s Rant by Wounded Knee that features in the video (which is about the death of Ian Tomlinson), and great tracks by the Japanese War Effort, Miaoux Miaoux and Fox Gut Daata.

Those who played on Friday were:

Neil Pennycook of Meursault | Yahweh | Debutant | Fox Gut Daata | Wounded Knee

This EP begins with a rousing sample from the King’s College Choir and then Moog weighs in with the lyrics “I will be clean, wash me clean as the snow”. He lets loose juddering drum beats made from coins falling on the ground, layers of electronic whistles, bells and synths, and someone, quite possibly his mum, accompanies him with a fiddle. He pays tribute to footballing giant Ian St John aka The Saint and one of the songs is called You Like Dogs LOL. But this is too good, too inspiringly original, too unapologetically fucked-up, to be dismissed that easily, making Moog one of Edinburgh’s most intriguing new musicians.

Following my mention of The Japanese War Effort yesterday, today two blog posts about him/them popped into my RSS reader. One was telling me I could download the new snowbird album for free from Winning Sperm Party (and to think I paid £2 for it on cassette on Friday night – worth every penny of course!). The other was a Song By Toad review of that very album.

So, I visited his myspace page when I got home (my work blocks all the evil social networking sites) and found this amazing video, which has made my day, especially as this is one of the buses I often jaunt around town on!
