King Creosote’s 8th Bit of Strange in 14 Years

By Milo | March 21, 2010

It really does feel strange posting an entire unreleased album by an artist on this blog as I’m usually pretty respectful about copyright and don’t post much that I don’t have prior permission (or at least implied permission) for. But this may be a new era of artist-authorised bootlegging, if Mr Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote has his way.

Because each version of this album that is recorded is completely unique, and certainly in the case of this recording, which comes to you via an old dictaphone of mine, far from perfect, it seems his aim is to create a buzz about this collection of songs without taking away from the official version, whenever that may be released (he’s hinted it may be the final ever KC album so let’s hope it’s not too soon).

Anyway have a listen if you wish – there will surely be versions out there with better sound quality, but you can still get an idea of how good the songs are, and also of what a great experience it was to sit and watch this being recorded from start to finish. In between the tracks are some strange sounds, which were in fact some interesting little video vignettes which announced each song. Also we were sat right at the front by the drums and bass, so KC’s vocal is a little quieter than you would wish.

This was in fact Mel’s recording, as I was recording it with the free iTalk app on my iPhone – that version would be substantially better sound quality but unfortunately it over-modulates quite a lot so I went for the dictaphone version.

That’s funny, I was at the 7th Bit of Strange just before you and was also sat in front of the bass and drums. Good bongo skills on display!

I recorded it on my dictaphone too but the sound wasn’t too good – posted a couple of snippets on UtR last week anyway. Have to admit I’ve never really been a big KC fan, but this was the highlight of my Homegame (along with Findo Gask) and, more than the whole concept, it was the vibe in the room that was so enjoyable. Can you imagine other songwriters of KC’s repute handing out free whisky to their fans and chatting to each and every one of them?

The Fence Collective approach may not rake in big bucks but experiments like this could well be the grassroots alternative to the stumbling major labels. Industry folk, take note (or better, leave it to the guys like Kenny Anderson).

PS. I can’t seem to get the recordings to play?

Glad you’re a KC convert Nick. it was pretty special wasn’t it?

Yeah it’s certainly an original approach, I think we need as many ideas as we can get right now.

I reckon the files are too large and will probably take an age to buffer, probably best just to download the zip file. Let me know if any probs with that though!

I got reasonable sound quality on my Zoom digital thingy, unfortunately there seems to have been a biological interface error and I’ve somehow not recorded the second half of the show (side 2 if you will).

I’m a bit of a div on times.

You should put a shout out on the beefboard Dylan, maybe someone else has had a similar ‘error’ and failed to record side 1 and you could combine efforts…
