100 Days to Get My Shit Together!

By Milo | November 30, 2009

For a while now, I’ve been trying to get my shit together.

I’ve been reading up on time management and decluttering and personal development and other stuff aimed at,  you know – helping you get your shit together. I’ve also been trying to improve this blog and post more regularly.

I’ve been making slow progress. Some things in my life are improving. But it’s bloody hard. There’s just not enough hours in the day etc etc (insert your favourite excuse here).

Well now it’s time to get bloody serious.

As you may already know, stand up comedian (I don’t think anyone says comedienne these days) Josie Long has started up a new project called ‘One Hundred Days To Make Me A Better Person’.

I found out about it via Fence’s Johnny Lynch, aka The Pictish Trail who has given himself the massive challenge of writing a song every day. And he’s written about it in characteristically hilarious style – check out what he had to say over on his blog.

I admire this goal and am in fact jealous. I’d love to be in a position to do something as productive and creative as this. But I’m just not ready. I’ve got a backlog of shit to get together.

So it’s a pretty vague goal, and a lot of it is behind the scenes personal stuff, but I’m going to ramp up my efforts to get myself sorted, and take one piece of simple, positive, concrete action each day towards the goal of being more organised, productive, creative and generally not a walking talking disaster waiting to happen car-crash of a human being :) And I may even provide updates of how I’m doing here (if I have my shit together enough).

Fellow blogger Mr Portis Wasp has also signed up, and has even posted a brand new interview with Mr Trail.

If you’d like to join us it starts tomorrow, December 1st. I know this isn’t much notice, but you probably already know what you need to do anyway and like me, just need to get your arse in gear.

Pretty nice. I like the guy who writes 100 novel beginnings in 100 days.
Put what is your pledge? "Get my shit together?" "Getting organized?" I think the more concrete it is, the easier it will be to really get it done. If self-organization is the goal, trying to implement ZenToDone might be worth a try, i.e. starting with "Write everything down" or any of the other points…

Hey Fabian, you’re right it isn’t really specific enough yet, because part of ‘getting my shit together’ is getting clarity about what I’m needing/wanting to do. I will do a post at some point in the next wee while that’s a little bit more specific.

Funny you should mention ZenToDone – I haven’t got that ebook but I have been re-reading the Power of Less today and trying to actually do what he says this time :)

While I personally do not follow any "system", the ZTD eBook is really useful because it provides ten concrete steps to take. Also, you are invited to add own steps, or leave some out, so in the end it’s really helpful 1) to get you started and 2) to take it somewhere afterwards. To me, it sounds like a good way to improve during this 100 day challenge! I don’t know the Power of Less, but probably it will be written in a similar manner, so best luck for the challenge and keep us updated!

Might have to go for it then Fabian, you’re not on commission are you? Cos if you have an affiliate link I’m happy to click it ;)

The Power of Less is not as specific as that but it’s got some great advice. the kind of book you have to read ten times before it sinks in properly.

Weird, I didn’t even know this was for SALE. There’s an official German edition in which the translator states that ZTD was released into the public domain…
After searching around a bit, here’s the official release link for ZTD: http://zenhabits.net/2008/01/open-source-blogging-feel-free-to-steal-my-content/ – So I think there’s no problem with just googling it and downloading it from some filehoster! :)
